Fillings Q & A

Why do I need a filling?

A dental filling is a tooth-colored composite bonding that hardens and replaces part of your tooth that’s decayed or damaged. You may need a filling if you have any of the following issues in a tooth.

  • Chip
  • Hole
  • Cavity
  • Crack
  • Fracture
  • Sensitivity

Because modern fillings are designed to blend in seamlessly with your teeth, they’re nearly undetectable when you smile or open your mouth.

What is the process of getting a filling?

New Family Dental proudly offers fast and effective filling treatments for all types of tooth issues, even if you have a dental emergency. When you come into the clinic for your evaluation, you’re likely going to need X-rays to begin. This allows your dentist to determine the severity of your tooth decay or damage.

Before getting started, your dentist shows you the images of your teeth and talks with you about what you should expect. The next step involves numbing your gums with a small injection, so you won’t have to worry about pain or discomfort.

Your dentist then drills your tooth to remove enamel and decay and to reshape your tooth in preparation for a filling. Depending on the location of your cavity, you may need a liner in the opening to protect your tooth’s pulp.

Next, your dentist fills in the opening with a composite bonding material and uses a specialized light to help the filling harden — this takes just a couple of minutes. Once your filling is in place, your dentist has you bite down to see where your filling may be sticking up. They can file down any areas that feel too high or out of place.

How long do fillings last?

With good oral hygiene, fillings can last for up to 15 years (sometimes even longer). To help your fillings last as long as possible, the team at New Family Dental recommend coming in every six months for a dental exam and cleaning. They can also teach you about good oral hygiene steps you can take at home to ensure your teeth stay healthy and decay-free.
