Dental Implants Q & A

What are the benefits of dental implants?

Dental implants have three primary components: The implant, the abutment, and the crown. The implant is what serves as your new tooth root, while the abutment is simply the base or attachment for your new crown.

Together, these components replace an already missing tooth or a tooth that requires extraction. Your dentist may recommend getting a dental implant to:

  • Prevent teeth from shifting
  • Maintain your normal bite
  • Minimize bone and gum tissue loss
  • Improve the appearance of your smile

Dental implants become permanent fixtures in your mouth and with good oral hygiene, can last for decades.

How long does it take to get a dental implant?

It can take several months to complete your dental implant treatment process because it takes your body time to build up new bone and tissue around the implant. After your initial dental implant consultation at New Family Dental, the next step is undergoing oral surgery to have the implant placed into your jaw bone.

It can take anywhere from three to six months for the implant site to heal. It may take even longer to get a dental implant if you also need a bone or tissue graft to help support the implant, a surgery that takes place before implant placement.

Once your implant is sturdy and surrounding tissues heal after several months, your dentist at New Family Dental performs additional procedures to expose the healed implant and attach the abutment in preparation for your crown.

Once your implant and abutment are secure, your dentist can bond your permanent crown — or bridge or overdenture — in place.

Is it painful to get a dental implant?

Modern dental implant procedures are much less invasive than in years past. Not only does your dentist at New Family Dental use gentle techniques during dental implant procedures, but they also thoroughly numb your gums so you shouldn’t feel any discomfort.

During your implant surgery, it’s common to feel some pressure or tension, but you shouldn’t feel pain. The compassionate dentists at New Family Dental are diligent about ensuring your entire dental implant treatment process is as comfortable as possible.
